Episode 05

The Eiffel Tower

Day 4, and the magic has worn off a little: Rose is tired and a bit lonely. So she orders a croissant like a local, asks a stranger for directions in French, and walks all the way to the Eiffel Tower. The French Ritual is a story-based French podcast where you learn French by living Rose's life with her.

What happens in this episode

After what Alex told her on the balcony, Rose wakes up tired and a little lonely. She shakes it off at the boulangerie, where she now orders in French like a local. Her phone is dead, so she stops a stranger to ask the way to the Eiffel Tower, and has to ask her to repeat. An hour and a half later, she's at the Trocadéro, then at the very top of the tower, with all of Paris below her. That night, she learns one of the most beautiful expressions in French… and then a mysterious email arrives.

It's immersive audio fiction: with rich ambient sound design, you're right there with Rose, hearing everyday French spoken naturally, repeated so it sticks, and explained in English as the story unfolds. No grammar drills, no textbook dialogues.

French you'll learn in Episode 04

In Episode 04, you'll learn how to say how you feel (tired, a bit lonely, already better), a full boulangerie conversation from bonjour to bonne journée, and how to ask for directions and understand the answer: straight ahead, right, left. Plus up high and down below, and one of the most French expressions there is, for when you miss someone or something.

THE RITUAL

Rose's Diary

At the end of every day, Rose opens her notebook and goes back over the French she met. It's her ritual, and it becomes yours.

These aren't random vocabulary words. Each one is attached to something that really happened to her today (so context): the tiny café table, her first order, and mixing the quiche next to Alex. She draws a little picture next to each phrase and reads it aloud. Then she closes her notebook, writes down every word she can remember, and reviews the ones she forgot.

That's the idea behind The French Ritual: you learn French by living Rose's life with her.

Jour 04 Vocabulary

THE METHOD

Rose's Memory Tricks

Rose doesn't memorise French from vocabulary lists. She creates sound-alike mnemonics: memorable connections between French words, familiar English sounds and what is happening in her life.

The stranger and more visual the association, the easier it is to remember when you hear the French again.

Three beige text boxes with purple headers and explanatory text in smaller font. The first box titled 'À gauche' says 'a gauche person' and describes a clumsy person bumping into things on their left. The second box titled 'Ça me manque' says 'it's missing from me' and explains missing someone from their life. The third box titled 'Ma famille me manque' says 'flip it!' and mentions missing their family, especially from New York.
