Episode 01
Why I Am Learning French
What happens in this episode
After a 12-hour flight, Rose lands in Paris speaking zero French. She manages her first real French sentence to get the keys to her new flat, then discovers the lift doesn't work. By the seventh floor, she's questioning every life decision. Then she opens the window onto Paris, and that night she begins the ritual she'll use to learn French.
You'll hear everyday French spoken naturally, repeated so it sticks, and explained in English as the story unfolds. No grammar drills, no textbook dialogues.
Meet Rose Desire, a 24-year-old American who moves from New York to Paris on a whim, without speaking French. This is where The French Ritual begins: a story-based French podcast where, instead of taking lessons, you learn French by living Rose's life with her.
THE RITUAL
Rose's Diary
At the end of every day, Rose opens her notebook and goes back over the French she met. It's her ritual, and it becomes yours.
These aren't random vocabulary words. Each one is tied to something that really happened to her: arriving at the flat, collecting the keys, climbing seven flights of stairs, and realising she's really moved to Paris.
That's the idea behind The French Ritual: you learn French by living Rose's life with her.

THE METHOD
Rose's Memory Tricks
Rose doesn't memorise French from vocabulary lists. She creates sound-alike mnemonics: memorable connections between French words, familiar English sounds and what is happening in her life.
The stranger and more visual the association, the easier it is to remember when you hear the French again.

Questions about Episode 01
Do I need to speak any French to start?
1
No. Episode 01 starts from zero, explained in English, and every episode after it introduces a little more French. Start here whatever your level.
Is The French Ritual podcast free?
2
The episodes are free on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Acast. Every episode is free in English, and Episode 01 is also free entirely in French. Membership adds the follow-along transcripts, Rose's Diary, and (for Parisiennes) the French transcripts, grammar deep dives and bonus episodes.
What's the difference between Flâneuse and Parisienne?
3
Flâneuse gives you the tools to follow the English episodes word by word and keep the vocabulary. Parisienne adds follow-along transcripts for the French versions, side-by-side transcripts, grammar deep dives and bonus episodes.
Do I need to start with Episode 01?
4
Yes, ideally. The French Ritual is one continuous story, with each episode following a new day in Rose’s life. Her French gradually develops as the story progresses, so new vocabulary, expressions and concepts build naturally from one episode to the next.
Starting with Episode 01 lets you learn French alongside Rose from the beginning. But each episode is designed to be enjoyable on its own, so you can jump into another episode whenever you like.
